Stonehenge
The Stonehenge is a prehistoric, mysterious circle of upright stones in Southern England. Work on the great monument began 5,000 years ago; the interesting stones that still stand upright today were put in place about 4,000 years ago. The structure of the Stonehenge is actually laid out on the line of the midsummer sunset, the longest and the shortest days of the year, and it seems likely that Stonehenge was built to mark these two events, wich would have been enabled people to chart the changing seasons. A tall wooden archway set 65 feeet away from the entrance. The 56 evenly spaced holes, or Aubrey holes, named after their discoverer, surrounded the wooden building, concentric with the ditch and bank. Their builders filled them in almost immdeiatley after they dug then (much later in Stonehenge's history they were filled with cremated human remains). At the entrance, there was a pair of stones, only one remaining now. It's called the Slaughter Stone. Outside the bank, lined up with the North East entrance, was a large sarsen stone. Called the Heel Stone, It's 16 feet tall and made of a type of sandstone called sarsen ''
